Susan Handy – General Manager

Susan, a third generation Californian from Los Angeles, first arrived on Nantucket Island in 1983 after extensive travels throughout Europe, Southeast Asia, and the South Pacific.  “It was just magical,” says Susan, recalling her first glimpse of Nantucket from the ferry on a sparkling July day.  She lived on a farm in Polpis, sailed by day, and hung out at the Straight Wharf Bar by night.

It was in the summer of 1987 when Susan, then working at the Boarding House and dreaming of having a place of her own, took notice of future business partner Jeff Worster’s cooking.  She hinted that when she found the perfect place, she’d like him to be the chef.

In the early spring of 1993, Black Eyed Susan’s made its debut and instantly became one of the most popular eateries on the island.

Susan and Jeff re-opened the Chanticleer in the summer of 2006 and have been charming the town of ‘Sconset ever since.

Jeff Worster – Executive Chef

Chef Jeff Worster arrived on Nantucket in the summer of 1986.  He was immediately at the forefront of nouveau cuisine working as Chef de Cuisine at the Boarding House with Chef and cookbook author Sarah Chase.

In 1992, he opened Black Eyed Susan’s with business partner Susan Handy where he became well known for his eclectic and inventive cooking style.  Combining flawless French technique and incorporating ethnic influences from Africa to Southeast Asia, to Latin America; the intimate eatery soon became one of the islands great success stories.

In 2006, the two business partners teamed up again to re-open the celebrated Chanticleer in ‘Sconset where he wows diners with his unique take on French brasserie classics.

Chef Worster has traveled extensively in the off seasons visiting and working in France, New York, Los Angeles, and Asia.  He has trained under master chefs and James Beard Award Winners Roland Gilbery of Tulipe, and Michel Richard of Citronelle

Panos Kakaviatos – Wine Steward

Born and educated in Washington D.C., Panos is not only a master of French wine, but also a trained journalist, having worked for the Associated Press, Agence France Presse, and currently writing for decanter.com.

Since 1996, Panos has called Strasbourg, France home. While working as a press attaché at the Council of Europe, he acquired his wine knowledge directly in Alsatian wine country, before discovering Bordeaux. He has also traveled and tasted through Bandol, Burgundy, Champagne, Irouleguy, Jura, the Loire Valley and the northern and southern Rhone.

Panos regularly attends the annual Bordeaux barrel tastings, including the 2006 vintage last April. He has hosted several notable wine festivals and dinners including the Bordeaux Wine Festival at the Hotel Adlon in Berlin, and most recently three days of a Pichon Longueville vertical with technical director Jean Rene Matignon. Chris Colburn - Chef de Cuisine

After pursuing multiple degrees at the University of Colorado, Chef Chris Colburn headed to San Francisco and spent time in the kitchens of James Beard award winners Jeremiah Tower, Michael Mina, and Gary Danko.

Chris was lured back to his home town of Denver by Chef Bryan Moscatello, Food and Wine Magazine’s “Best New Chef of 2003” to take on duties as Pastry Chef at the award winning Adega Restaurant + Wine Bar.  Colburn was then tapped to open Mirepoix, Moscatello’s second eatery in the Mile High City.

Now on the East Coast and at the helm of the famed Chanticleer, he and Executive Chef Jeff Worster interpret brasserie classics with a modern twist.
